Quarterly roundup March+June 2021 *Spoiler Free*

"Putting the shopping trolley away is an excellent demonstration of character."
These are impressions, not reviews. Look for someone much more qualified for those.

Apart from LotR, I didn't watch a single thing until May. So pushed LotR forward.

Gemini Man [2019]
So, 60fps. Looks good. Wish more films would do it.
The premise is quite interesting but the execution is just fine.
Sound is good. VFX is a little overdone in a few scenes but all in all is fine, even good at times.

Greyhound [2020]
Being the warship fan that I am, this movie is right up my ally.
Its depiction of navel warfare is fairly realistic. So much so that I'd say it's the most realistic representation I've seen in quite a while.
Sound and VFX are excellent.

House M.D Season 6
Finally got around to watching more of it. Probably the best season so far.
Hugh Laurie is definitively one of my most liked actors.

The Karate Kid 1-4 [1984-1986-1989-1994]
I've watched the first 3 movies dozens of times. Absolutely love em.
An excellent message with heaps of little pearls of wisdom sprinkled through-out.

Never watched The Next Karate Kid, dunno why really but oh well. Had it on my server for years too.
Anyway, I think it's good enough. Sure it retreads a good chunk of the first movie but I'm not exactly sure what people expected. Like for example if you do what the 2010 remake did, Mr Miyagi wouldn't be Mr Miyagi anymore.

The Lord of the Rings Extended UHD Remasters [2020]
The greatest trilogy ever created, now in 4k.
However, as mind-boggling as this may sound. As far as I understand, this isn't actually a full re-scan of the original film... so down a point before the case has even been opened.
Speaking of which, the discs, holy shit, I went through 3 sets before being able rip everything.
The first set had a dud disc 5, the second set had a dud disc 3, and 5, the third had a dud disc 2.
Lets just say, this is perfect example of why someone would sail the high seas.
Was finally able to get a good enough copy in May.

Anyway onto the actually films themselves. That's what we're here for right?
Apparently they did do a 4k re-scan of some FotR sceans. And they do look good.
Not fantastic but 35mm is well, 35mm.
The scenes with lots of VFX look a heck of a lot better now, so there's that.
There's several other changes in terms of colouration. I don't really care for one version over the other.

Also not sure what the origin of it is but my copies had some bad audio flutter.
Particularly near the end of RotK.

Assuming you can get a good copy, I tentatively recommend getting it if you've got he blu-rays or aren't as infatuated with it as I am.

Source Code [2011]
I quite like this one.
Plenty of fun. Particularly the bit with the train.

Star Trek; The Original Series
So this was an interesting watch. The 60's really were a different time.
If you've seen the newer movies/shows and wanna see where it all began, I recommend it.

"Hey look", "Those people know writing and stuff", "Listen to them"... These are impressions, not reviews. Titles completed during this period 2020-07-01 to 2020-09-30 2012 (2009) As long as you turn off your brain it's a good fodder movie. The fx really hasn't held up though. 3 Days to Kill (2014) Not great, well not even good. Actually it's below average. Kevin Costner does an alright job but he's just one man, and just one man can't save this film. Sound and Fx are average at best. Avatar (2009) If there is anything going for Avatar, it's that even 11 years later it's still quite visually stunning which isn't to say its vfx are anything to write home about these days. Acting is good I suppose. Sound and music on the other hand, it's done well, like really well. Glory (1989) With Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, and Andre Braugher, how could it not be a great film? Not really familiar with US Civil War specifics so c...

Quarterly roundup March 2022 *Spoiler Free*

" To build may have to be the slow and laborious task of years. To destroy can be the thoughtless act of a single day. "   These are impressions, not reviews. Look for someone much more qualified for those. Titles completed during this period 2022-01-01 to 2022-03-31   47 Ronin [2013]  I had heard mixed but generally positive things about this film. Always been a fan of Reanu, and Hiroyuki so finally got around to watching and I like it. Don't think it's as great as The Last Samurai but it's up there for me. Could've been a bit longer though, to flesh out the witch a bit more, and possibly some of the other 47 Ronin. IMHO if you are interested by feudal Japan or the legend of the 47 Ronin, then consider this a must-watch.   Ender's Game [2014]  Went into this one with only my brothers recommendation. It's interesting to say the least.   Forrest Gump [1994] Everyone knows this movie so need I say more?   Saving Private Ryan [1998]   Again, ...

Time and Date formats.

I wanted to give my take on the debate about which date and time format is the best. The are 3 main formats for dates and 2 for time. D/M/Y, Y/M/D, M/D/Y, 12 and 24 hour time. There are other formats but these are the main ones. So why do I use Y/M/D 24h in a country that uses D/M/Y 12h? It's simple really but first, lets all agree that M/D/Y makes no dam sense. Anyway, moving on, D/M/Y and Y/M/D Makes sense because it goes from smallest to biggest or biggest to smallest and they can be easily swapped between but the biggest reason is due to how a computer counts. The most commonly used counting system is the hexadecimal (edit: sorry, I meant base36, hexadecimal is base 16) system which is from of 0 to Z. So 0, 1... 9, A, B... Z and symbols have their own block but that varies bit as to which character-encoding scheme is used. If you have a set of files that all start with the date and you sort by name. Under the D/M/Y system you get, 01-01-2010 01-02-2010 01-10-2009...
