Quarterly roundup December 2018 *Spoiler Free*

I'll write a post every 3 months which'll contain the thoughts I had right after watching an anime, movie or tv show. As such it should be taken as mere thoughts that I had directly after watching it. It's NOT a review, more of a final impression if you will.
Anyway It'll contain whatever I watched during those 3 months with little if any regard to release season or current trends.
You can find my complete list of anime I've watched and their ratings on kitsu.io/users/APasz/library. There is no list for western tv/movies unfortunately. If anyone has a good suggestion, let me know.
So without further ado.
English title「Japanese title」*=unofficial.

Eureka Season 1-5
I think most, if not all techies who were around in 2006 have heard of this show so I might be singing to the choir here but whatever. It's full of mostly believably advanced tech. Yes you do have to suspend your disbelief and remember this show is practically a decade old now.
The worst part of the show is the writing, sometimes it just feels like a cop out or just too convenient but everything else is good the vast majority of the time.

Now there is a crossover between this and Warehouse 13. There is only one episode and thankfully it is a fairly interesting one so yay.
There are a few references between the two shows but the majority are in WH13 since it started after Eureka.

Independence Day (1996)
Everyone knows of this movie. It's become a cult classic.
Sure it's kinda crap for a 90's film but it does just enough things right for it to be enjoyable rather than a horrid mass of WTFness.

Independence Day: Resurgence (2016)
You know how they say "the second is never as good as the first", well it couldn't be more true than it is with this movie.
I question why certain scenes exist or at least combined with others. I question why certain things are glossed over while others are drawn out.

Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018)
Again, "the second is never as good as the first" but you know what, I don't think it was as bad as people say it is. Let's be real here, we're here to see giant mechs fight these huge monsters from across the universe. The story really isn't all that important. It's the Call of Duty of movies.
Also maybe in the third installment they'll finally rethink base design, I mean come on, why would you put your command deck right there.

Shrek (2001-2004-2007-2010)
I haven't watched Shrek since I was a kid but I can for sure that at least for the first two, I haven't been wearing rose tinted glasses. Yes there are plot holes and plenty of things one could nitpick however, one must agree that the Holding out for a Hero scene in Shrek 2 has to been one of the greatest animated scenes around. Not the absolute greatest but up there.

There is something here for everyone. There are things that just flew right over my head as a child but now I chuckle at them. I think this is one of the main things that make Dreamworks, Disney, and Pixar movies so good. There are things that just fly right over the heads of the kids but the adults catch them and have a chuckle.

Technically speaking these movies are wonders for their time.

Warehouse 13 Season 1-5
While the production quality and story isn't always as fantastic as it possibly could of been, it is at the end of the day, a great show and well worth the time if it's a genre you enjoy.
It is sad that it was canceled but at least it got a rushed ending, rather than the abrupt endings that are so common with the Syfy network.

There is a crossover between this and Eureka. Unlike Eureka though there are multiple episodes and we learn a bit about Fargo [Eureka] as a character.
There are quite a few references between the two shows, especially in WH13 since it started after Eureka.

Zootopia (2016)
I think this is the second, maybe third time I've watched it. And as is expected from Disney at this point, it is a wonderous film with something for everyone.
Technically speaking, it's a brilliant film. The writing is pretty great although, I wish a couple of things like the length of the two time jumps were made a bit clearer but other than that everything is pretty darn great.

Quarterly roundup September 2020 *Spoiler Free*

"Hey look", "Those people know writing and stuff", "Listen to them"... These are impressions, not reviews. Titles completed during this period 2020-07-01 to 2020-09-30 2012 (2009) As long as you turn off your brain it's a good fodder movie. The fx really hasn't held up though. 3 Days to Kill (2014) Not great, well not even good. Actually it's below average. Kevin Costner does an alright job but he's just one man, and just one man can't save this film. Sound and Fx are average at best. Avatar (2009) If there is anything going for Avatar, it's that even 11 years later it's still quite visually stunning which isn't to say its vfx are anything to write home about these days. Acting is good I suppose. Sound and music on the other hand, it's done well, like really well. Glory (1989) With Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, and Andre Braugher, how could it not be a great film? Not really familiar with US Civil War specifics so c...

Quarterly roundup March 2022 *Spoiler Free*

" To build may have to be the slow and laborious task of years. To destroy can be the thoughtless act of a single day. "   These are impressions, not reviews. Look for someone much more qualified for those. Titles completed during this period 2022-01-01 to 2022-03-31   47 Ronin [2013]  I had heard mixed but generally positive things about this film. Always been a fan of Reanu, and Hiroyuki so finally got around to watching and I like it. Don't think it's as great as The Last Samurai but it's up there for me. Could've been a bit longer though, to flesh out the witch a bit more, and possibly some of the other 47 Ronin. IMHO if you are interested by feudal Japan or the legend of the 47 Ronin, then consider this a must-watch.   Ender's Game [2014]  Went into this one with only my brothers recommendation. It's interesting to say the least.   Forrest Gump [1994] Everyone knows this movie so need I say more?   Saving Private Ryan [1998]   Again, ...

Time and Date formats.

I wanted to give my take on the debate about which date and time format is the best. The are 3 main formats for dates and 2 for time. D/M/Y, Y/M/D, M/D/Y, 12 and 24 hour time. There are other formats but these are the main ones. So why do I use Y/M/D 24h in a country that uses D/M/Y 12h? It's simple really but first, lets all agree that M/D/Y makes no dam sense. Anyway, moving on, D/M/Y and Y/M/D Makes sense because it goes from smallest to biggest or biggest to smallest and they can be easily swapped between but the biggest reason is due to how a computer counts. The most commonly used counting system is the hexadecimal (edit: sorry, I meant base36, hexadecimal is base 16) system which is from of 0 to Z. So 0, 1... 9, A, B... Z and symbols have their own block but that varies bit as to which character-encoding scheme is used. If you have a set of files that all start with the date and you sort by name. Under the D/M/Y system you get, 01-01-2010 01-02-2010 01-10-2009...
