Battlefield 1 Open Beta Thoughts

The Battlefield 1 open beta (or bata if you're American), has just ended.
Now it time to figure out weather you should pre-oreder or not.

The answer is NO, you should not pre-order Battlefield 1.

Well thanks guys for that very informative talk, I'll see... wait, what do you mean I have to actually talk about it. Fine whatever random person on the internet.

I was only able to manage 3.5ish hours in the beta, I would of liked playing more but I'm busy.
I'll start off with a very simple list of the Good and Bad in the Beta.

The Good

  1. Clean and Informative User Interface.
  2. 60 tick Servers
  3. No Americans
  4. Battlefield Feel

The Bad

  1. Only one map
  2. No offline

The Neutral

  1. Class System
  2. Weapon and Map Balance

I don't often bring up UI design but when I do, there is something there. I can't can't quite put my finger on it though, maybe it's the clean white style, the animations, placement, context.
It just fits and refreshing somehow.

It seems DICE have figured it out when others *cough* activision *cough* haven't.
60 tick servers were standard in the beta, I doubt this will hold true for private servers but if DICE is running 60 as standard, then they'll be pushing hosts to offer 60 as standard which is an awesome thing.

For those of you who don't know what a tick or tickrate is, it's the rate at which everything digital refreshes allowing it to process data or display information. Your monitor is most likely 60Hz meaning it can display up to 60 frames per second. Normally game servers run at 20 ticks, meaning that player positions among other things are only updated 20 times per second which is really really slow for computers which deal in milliseconds as standard.
For the end user this means the higher the tickrate, the more accurate everything will feel and the less dying round corners.
The downside to high a tickrate is higher bandwidth usage so, if your internet is crappy, you'll have a crappy time. Simple as that.

Anyway enough rambling about tickrate, There are no Americans in the BF1 open beta.
This makes sense as they only joined WW1 in the last 1.5ish years.
To be completely honest, I'm sick and tired of the USA.

Battlefield 1 still feels like Battlefield but not like BF3/4, it's more like BF1942.
The younglings of our community may not like BF1 as much as previous games.
I'm personally very pleased that it reminds me of BF1942.

So there was only one map which is pretty standard but that is really annoying. In this case tanks were king because the map was so open with a tiny amount of cover. In future I would like to see not just DICE but other Dev's as well provide one big, wide open map but also a tight, inf only map at the very least. And no a single map with both elements, that just does not cut it.

I'm going to brings this up every chance I get. I've had my fill of online play, maybe I've just grown up a bit and as a result online multi-player just isn't what I'm looking for these days.
Call of Duty has been providing 'offline' multiplayer for a while now. Most of the CoD games have some sort of bot play, although it does require a internet connection on the PC because we all pirate, apparently. I'm looking forward to the day when I can just dick around playing against bots at 3am in a Battlefield game, something I miss from the BF2 days.

Anyway It's something that BF had up to BF2142 and its the thing that so deeply in-bedded Battlefield in me. That happens when you've only got BF, Sims, GTA and Space Cadet to keep your 10 year old self entertained without internet.

The Class system has been mixed up a bit. The are technically 5 classes due to the new,
Pilot/Tanker class which is what you spawn with in vehicles. The main role of this class is to prevent the 'jet-taxi' problem where someone will spawn into a vehicle, drive or fly to where they want to go and discarding the vehicle rendering it useless, for at least 60 seconds while it blows up and re-spawns at deployment.
Assault is now the most offensive class in the game with Anti-tank weaponry and an SMG.
Support is basically the same as always with Ammo packs and an LMG.
Medic can heal, revive, repair and has a Semi-Auto rifle. This guy will be the most important.
Scout is functionally the same as it has been ever since BF1942.

To be honest, its way to early to be calling how this is going to play out in the long run. However I like that they have given the most powerful class the historically correct weapon.

Also as with the class system it's too early to say anything for sure about balance. We only had one map and a limited set of weapons/gadgets after all.
-----------------------
At the end of the day, am I looking forward to Battlefield 1?
Yes, yes I'm looking forward to it. Am I going to pre-order? NO, pre-ordering is stupid for digital items but that's a blog for another day.

I've always trusted DICE as a developer, its EA who I don't trust.

As always if you have any questions or criticisms about anything at all, leave them in the comments or something. I read everything.
じゃあね Ciao

Titles completed during this period 2020-07-01 to 2020-09-30 2012 (2009) As long as you turn off your brain it's a good fodder movie. The fx really hasn't held up though. 3 Days to Kill (2014) Not great, well not even good. Actually it's below average. Kevin Costner does an alright job but he's just one man, and just one man can't save this film. Sound and Fx are average at best. Avatar (2009) If there is anything going for Avatar, it's that even 11 years later it's still quite visually stunning which isn't to say its vfx are anything to write home about these days. Acting is good I suppose. Sound and music on the other hand, it's done well, like really well. Glory (1989) With Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, and Andre Braugher, how could it not be a great film? Not really familiar with US Civil War specifics so c...

Quarterly roundup March 2022 *Spoiler Free*

" To build may have to be the slow and laborious task of years. To destroy can be the thoughtless act of a single day. "   These are impressions, not reviews. Look for someone much more qualified for those. Titles completed during this period 2022-01-01 to 2022-03-31   47 Ronin [2013]  I had heard mixed but generally positive things about this film. Always been a fan of Reanu, and Hiroyuki so finally got around to watching and I like it. Don't think it's as great as The Last Samurai but it's up there for me. Could've been a bit longer though, to flesh out the witch a bit more, and possibly some of the other 47 Ronin. IMHO if you are interested by feudal Japan or the legend of the 47 Ronin, then consider this a must-watch.   Ender's Game [2014]  Went into this one with only my brothers recommendation. It's interesting to say the least.   Forrest Gump [1994] Everyone knows this movie so need I say more?   Saving Private Ryan [1998]   Again, ...

Time and Date formats.

I wanted to give my take on the debate about which date and time format is the best. The are 3 main formats for dates and 2 for time. D/M/Y, Y/M/D, M/D/Y, 12 and 24 hour time. There are other formats but these are the main ones. So why do I use Y/M/D 24h in a country that uses D/M/Y 12h? It's simple really but first, lets all agree that M/D/Y makes no dam sense. Anyway, moving on, D/M/Y and Y/M/D Makes sense because it goes from smallest to biggest or biggest to smallest and they can be easily swapped between but the biggest reason is due to how a computer counts. The most commonly used counting system is the hexadecimal (edit: sorry, I meant base36, hexadecimal is base 16) system which is from of 0 to Z. So 0, 1... 9, A, B... Z and symbols have their own block but that varies bit as to which character-encoding scheme is used. If you have a set of files that all start with the date and you sort by name. Under the D/M/Y system you get, 01-01-2010 01-02-2010 01-10-2009...
